## Automation — automate heavily, then engineer it to fail safely

Dr. Bull holds a PhD in computer science and engineering, with a focus on
security, redundancy, and risk management. It's the same discipline, applied to
living systems. Automation gives you stability, faster alerts, lower running
costs, and a precision you can't match by hand. But the more a reef leans on
automation, the more it depends on that automation holding, so **every automated
function has a fail-safe behind it**.

These same methods kept a 5,000-gallon coral aquaculture facility running through
upstate New York winters and several extended power outages, all managed
remotely, with alerts reaching a phone hundreds of miles away and every animal
fine by morning. That original Bull Reef Aquaculture facility has since closed,
but the engineering that kept it alive and thriving is exactly what we now bring
to your reef.

#### SYS · Redundancy and fail-safes
Battery backups on every return pump, a whole-facility generator, doubled
critical devices, and cold spares on the shelf. Nothing mission-critical rides on
a single point of failure.

#### CHEM · Layered chemistry control
Kalkwasser, a pH-controlled calcium reactor, and two-part dosing with trace
elements all work together, so if CO₂ runs out or a doser fails, alkalinity and
calcium still hold.

#### MON · Remote monitoring and alerts
pH, conductivity, temperature, and layered optical water-level sensing, with
alerts prioritized so a return-pump failure reaches you before a harmless pH
swing does.

#### ENV · Seasonal light and temperature
Solar and lunar cycles, plus a seasonal temperature curve modeled on the Coral

## AI, sensing and data — your systems know more than they tell you

Most controllers log their readings and will graph the last week or month of them
on the display, covering temperature, pH, salinity, and whatever else you have on
a probe. That window slides forward as it fills, and what drops off the back is
gone. What they don't do is accumulate. You can't set this July beside the last
five, hold one system against the others in the building, or trace a decline back
to the week it started. When one colony thrives and the one beside it fails, the
answer is often in data the controller had and then overwrote.

We build what goes on top of that hardware: the instrumentation, the data
collection that outlives the controller's memory, and the analysis that turns
years of readings into something your staff can question directly. It also gives
early warning about where a system is heading.

flow, level, power draw, and room conditions, including the things most

Inside a small city zoo, a former auditorium became the second-largest coral reef
exhibit in the Northeast. One 2,500-gallon system links two displays, a
soft-coral habitat and a reef-building stony-coral community. Together they hold
more than 300 species of coral alongside fish and invertebrates.

Every coral traces back to founding mother colonies Dr. Bull cultivated over
decades, and the Utica Zoo now safeguards part of that living collection. It runs
on a purpose-built life-support system designed as a complete biome, from the
bacteria in the sand to working fish that each do a job in the nitrogen cycle,
with a dedicated backup generator protecting the animals when the power fails.

Its conservation story doubles as a lesson. Coral is an endangered animal, not a
plant. On opening weekend, kids were already finding Nemo. The reef is also one
node in a distributed living gene bank. The same coral lineage now lives at AZA
institutions coast to coast, from the Utica Zoo in New York to the Point Defiance
Zoo & Aquarium in Washington. From there, it can be pruned, fragmented, and
shared with zoos and aquariums across the U.S. and abroad.

Named for the Bull Family — Bruce and Frances Bull, whose gift made the exhibit
possible, and their son Dr. Ronny Bull, who designed and grew it.

## Coral rescue and propagation — partners in conservation infrastructure

Florida's Coral Reef is in crisis. Stony coral tissue loss disease and record
heat have pushed reef-building species toward functional extinction, and much of
the response is now happening on land, inside AZA aquariums.

We design and engineer the infrastructure behind that work: land-based holding
and quarantine systems, gene-bank and grow-out arrays, and the husbandry
protocols to run them. This is capacity built specifically for SAFE Coral and
Florida Reef Tract Rescue institutions.

### Proof of work — Greensboro, NC

When the Bull Reef Aquaculture facility closed, the **Greensboro Science
Center**, accredited by both the AZA and the AAM, purchased the facility's entire
hardware build through a conservation grant: the life-support systems, lighting,
tanks, filtration, and automation equipment. Their team traveled to upstate New
York, packed the whole build, and hauled it back to North Carolina, where it will
be installed in **fall 2027** at the new Aquatic Rehabilitation & Conservation
Center, the GSC's ocean lab for Florida Reef Tract rescue and coral propagation.

A rescue program doesn't spend grant money to move an entire system across the
country unless it trusts that system completely. Ours earned that trust, and it
now forms the backbone of an AZA coral-rescue facility.

**Dr. Ronny Bull** — Owner & Chief Scientist, Bull Reef Consulting (Bull Reef, LLC).

Dr. Bull started keeping saltwater corals at age six, tending tanks in his
bedroom. More than 35 years of cultivating coral later, he grew every one of the
300+ species in the Utica Zoo's landmark exhibit. He has since closed the farm
behind it and relocated to Florida to focus entirely on consulting, design, and
engineering.

### How much does a coral reef exhibit cost?

Every coral reef exhibit is custom, so cost depends on scale, system complexity,

### How long does it take to design and build a coral reef exhibit?

Timelines vary with the size and complexity of the system. Every exhibit moves
through five phases — assess, design, engineer & build, stock, and sustain — and
we give you a realistic schedule once the project is scoped. Living reefs also
need a maturation period after the build before they're fully established, which
we plan for from the start.

### Do you work on existing exhibits, or only new builds?

Both. We design and build new coral reef exhibits from a blank wall, and we also
assess, renovate, and upgrade existing or inherited systems, improving life

### What is a coral gene bank, and why does it matter?

A coral gene bank is a living, distributed collection of founding mother colonies
held across trusted institutions, so genetic diversity is preserved and can be
propagated rather than re-collected from wild reefs. Our colonies are maintained
across AZA-accredited partners, and they can be divided, grown out, and
distributed to zoos and aquariums in the U.S. and internationally. As wild reefs
decline, these living banks are increasingly important for conservation,
